Hip Replacement

Jehangir Hospital is one of the foremost institutions for all surgeries related to joint replacement, hip replacement, spine surgeries, and various orthopaedic issues. If you require hip replacement surgery, our panel of leading surgeons, with their extensive experience, ensures the highest standards of care.

Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacement surgery can be performed using traditional methods or minimally invasive techniques. The primary difference between these procedures lies in the size of the incision. In standard hip replacement surgery, a large incision is made along the side of the hip, and the muscles attached to the top of the thighbone are moved to expose the joint. The rounded head (ball) of the thighbone (femur) is then removed, and the damaged bone is taken out from the cup-shaped hip bone (acetabulum). The ball and socket are replaced with smooth artificial surfaces, which are secured to the healthy thigh and hip bones using either cement or a special material that allows the remaining bone to attach to the new joint. The new ball part of the thighbone is then inserted into the new socket part of the hip.

Types of Hip Surgery
Our hip surgeons specialise in both traditional open surgery and the latest minimally invasive procedures, including arthroscopy and robotic surgery, for various hip conditions. These treatments include, but are not limited to:
Hip Cartilage/Labral Repair: Our orthopaedic surgeons possess specialised expertise in replacing missing cartilage and repairing labral tears using arthroscopy. This procedure involves inserting a fibre optic camera into a small incision to examine the joint.
Hip Resurfacing: If a hip replacement is not necessary, your surgeon may recommend hip resurfacing, which relines the hip joint rather than replacing it completely. This can be a suitable alternative for younger, active individuals.
Hip Fracture Repair: Hip fractures can occur due to osteoporosis or repetitive impact in athletes. The type and location of the fracture determine the surgical approach. Often, our orthopaedic surgeons use metal screws, rods, or plates to hold the bone together while it heals. If the bones cannot be aligned properly, joint replacement may be considered.
Osteotomy: Used to treat hip dysplasia, this procedure reshapes the hip socket to better cover the ball of the hip joint, enhancing stability.
Muscle/Tendon Repairs: Severe tears in muscles or tendons (such as the hamstring, gluteus medius, or adductor) may require surgery. Arthroscopic techniques can repair some tears, while larger or chronic tears may necessitate an open procedure.
Hip Bursitis Treatment: The hip joint has two bursae that can become inflamed or infected. If conventional treatments fail, surgical removal of the bursae may be required.
Neuro Orthopaedic Surgery: We offer specialised neuro orthopaedic expertise for orthopaedic manifestations of the nervous system. For patients with hip pain, extra bone growth due to injury, or hip contractures, our surgeons perform procedures such as a girdlestone or fibreosteotomy, dissecting the nerve and repairing the joint.
Partial Hip Replacement: When damage is confined to the ball of the joint, a partial hip replacement may be an option. This involves replacing the ball with an artificial implant made of plastic, metal, or ceramic, while the socket remains unchanged.
Total Hip Replacement: This procedure involves removing damaged bone and cartilage and replacing them with prosthetics made from plastic, metal, or ceramic. We offer both traditional and robotic total hip replacement surgery using the Mako hip replacement robot.

Hip Decompression for Arthritis: This technique can prevent the progression to severe arthritis and the need for hip replacement. It involves drilling into the hip bone to remove dead bone, followed by the insertion of a mix of blood and progenitor cells from your own bone marrow to restore hip function.

What is Hip Replacement Surgery?

Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial one. It is typically recommended for patients with severe hip pain and disability due to arthritis, injury, or other conditions.

Who is a Candidate for Hip Replacement Surgery?

Candidates for hip replacement surgery usually experience significant hip pain that interferes with daily activities, have limited mobility, and have not found relief from conservative treatments such as medication, physical therapy, or lifestyle changes.

A Few Questions you Might have About Hip Replacement Surgery:
What is minimally invasive hip replacement surgery?

Minimally invasive hip replacement surgery involves smaller incisions compared to traditional surgery, resulting in less muscle damage, reduced pain, faster recovery, and a shorter hospital stay.

How long does hip replacement surgery take?

Hip replacement surgery typically takes about 1 to 2 hours. The exact duration can vary depending on the complexity of the case and the specific surgical approach used.

What is the recovery time after hip replacement surgery?

Recovery time can vary, but most patients can expect to return to normal activities within 3 to 6 months. Rehabilitation and physical therapy are crucial for a successful recovery.

Can I lead a normal life after hip replacement surgery?

Most patients can return to their normal activities after hip replacement surgery, including walking, swimming, and other low-impact exercises. High-impact activities, such as running and jumping, should be avoided to prolong the life of the implant.

Will I need physical therapy after hip replacement surgery?

Yes, physical therapy is an essential part of the recovery process. It helps to strengthen the muscles around the hip, improve flexibility, and restore normal movement patterns.

Can both hips be replaced at the same time?

In some cases, both hips can be replaced during the same surgery. This is called bilateral hip replacement. The decision depends on the patient's overall health and specific medical condition. Your surgeon will discuss the best approach for your situation.

If you have any additional questions or concerns about hip replacement surgery, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our team at Jehangir Hospital is here to provide you with the information and support you need.
