The symptoms you need to know about

While the symptoms of menopause can vary from person to person, it’s pretty clear to see why menopause affects each woman differently. From the widely recognised symptoms such as hot flushes and sweats to even uncommon ones such as nausea and anxiety, read on to know more about the symptoms to look out for.

Common symptoms leading up to and during menopause can typically range from the following:

  • Hot flushes (usually accompanied by sweating, it is experienced by over 80% of women)
  • Night sweats (excessive sweating at night can be disruptive to your quality of life)
  • Irregular periods (including heavy periods and period pain)
  • Intimate body problems (including breast pain, vaginal dryness and loss of libido)
  • Weight gain (due to hormonal changes and lowering of metabolism)
  • Mood changes (including anxiety, mood swings, low mood, stress and panic attacks)
  • Joint and muscle pain (commonly affecting the neck, shoulders, elbows and hands)
  • Fatigue (experienced by most women in varying degrees, nutritional needs should be tended to)

Less common symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Sleep disturbances
  • Digestive problems (with indigestion and bloating)
  • Nausea (including dehydration, stressed liver, low blood sugar)
  • Headaches (due to hormonal changes)
  • Bladder problems (as well as the risk of urinary tract infections)
  • Itchy skin and hair loss (lower collagen levels lead to wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity)
  • Dry mouth, dry eyes and brittle nails (due to lowered oestrogen levels)
  • Memory lapses and difficulty in concentration (caused with hormonal fluctuations)
  • Dizziness, high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat (which can cause added stress and anxiety)
  • Osteoporosis (as bones lose their calcium content and weaken)

At Jehangir Hospital, we’re happy to be launching a Women’s Midlife Clinic on the occasion of International #Women’s Day. For any queries regarding your health during menopause, we’re always here for you!
