Coronary Circulation

What is meant by heart attack? It sounds to be related to the heart. But, what it is? It is one of the most common diseases which are related to lifestyle in modern times. What exactly happens if an individual suffers from the disease? Does it affect only the heart or affects the normal function of the whole body? Or does it mean, it affects the heart, any disruption in the activity of the heart also affects supply of blood to the body.

The function of circulation of blood in the blood vessels of the heart muscle, also known as “myocardium”, is coronary circulation. The vessels, known as coronary artery are those which supply oxygen rich blood to the myocardium. Since coronary arteries are also classified as “end circulation”, which means it is the only source of blood supply to the myocardium, and hence blockage of these arteries is critical to prevent heart conditions.

Which class of diseases does heart attack fall in to and what are the causes? Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease and also the cause of heart attack. If an individual has this condition, it means plaque has built up along the inner walls of the arteries which reduces flow of blood to the heart.

Sadly, the condition has no symptoms progressing slowly for decades before the onset of first symptom, which is usually “heart attack”. The condition in a stable form is called angina, which can happen due to decreased tolerance to exercise or due to exertion. A heart condition in an unstable form, presents itself as chest pain in rest state, or angina in a worse form. Does the disease affect certain group of individuals, or it can happen to anyone? Research and statistics suggests the risk of narrowing of artery increases with age, smoking, blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes are some of the conditions associated with coronary artery disease.

Are there ways individuals have some sign of the condition? If so, what measures can be taken to control the condition? Some of the ways to know prevalence of the condition is Electrocardiogram, blood tests, cardiac stress test, or coronary angiogram. Depending on risk, and symptoms course of treatment is chosen for the individual. Like most diseases, there are no clear cut reasons, but combination of prevention through diet, or medication for diabetes, blood pressure are used ,to both prevent and avoid complication.
